While she was out swimming, biking and running for 12.5 hours, I needed something to keep myself entertained. When I wasn't cheering on the athletes, I was taking pictures.

You've heard the saying, a picture is worth 1000 words. In this case, four pictures tell the story of girl chicks boy.

Onward and Upward

I've known Dean for nine years and the Onward and Upward sign off is always uplifting. If I'm running great I'm on the Upward. If I'm injured (which occurs more frequently than I wish), the Onward is hopeful.

For the past six months I've had a tough time with running. Lacking speed, motivation and endurance running wasn't fun and I compared myself to the prior me. Comparing myself to the prior me lead to nothing but a depressive pity party. I wanted dearly to be back to the prior me...even the nine years ago prior me when I first started running. Knowing the only way to get there was to get out there and not worry about speed, just start running.

I finally feel like I have my mojo back. I've went out to Dean's track practice twice, I'm up to a 10 miles long run and have been out to 5K's and 10K's. It's been great being at the races and seeing all the runners. I even ran into my good bead-nose friend Jeff from Running Thru Phoenix at the Moon Valley 5k and I'm looking forward to the Fiesta Bowl half in December and Ragnar in February.

It's so wonderful having the Onward and Upward motivation back.
While it was quite slow compared to my runs over the years, I ran the whole thing and came in under 10 min/mile at 39:16. This is great considering I figured I would walk part of it. Maybe, just maybe, I am on my way back?Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02527827359630897863noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162997883019077328.post-69353430541300069432015-06-14T18:45:00.000-07:002015-06-14T18:45:45.774-07:00Racing to Find MojoThe lack of running motivation continues to plague me. Running 3 miles without stopping is so hard for me to actually accomplish and once I start walking, there's not much at that point to keep me running. With hopes to find my running mojo again, I signed up for the Arizona Road Racers summer series. There are 5 races spread throughout the summer that are 5K's, except the 4th of July is a 4 miler.

I missed the first race since I was out of town. Today was the 2nd race and the convenient location was only 4 miles away at Rose Moffet Park, Phoenix.

My goal was to run 9:15's and be sub-30min overall. The first mile took forever and yes, I felt like stopping. I knew the 1.5 mile mark would be tough because usually that's when I start walking on my runs at home. I told myself walking wasn't an option but 10 minute miles or even 11's were an option. I really wanted to finish the race without stopping.

I finished in a personal worst time of 29:15 but overall I'm happy because I did run the whole thing. I don't have my running mojo back but figure I have to keep getting myself out there. Next race is in 3 weeks on the 4th of July.
Back in November I applied to be an Arist in Residence (AiR) at Hubbell Trading Post. I thought out of all of the National Parks and National Park Historic sites that had AiR programs, this would be the most likely. It's not a huge site and a pretty remote location. My gamble paid off and I received an email letting me know that I was accepted.

May 16th to May 23rd, I'll be living onsite Hubbell Trading Post in a small stone hogan. For a full week I can focus on photography! There are so many places to see around there. Canyon de Chelly being the most popular and closest. I've never been to the area before and am looking forward to exploring.

I'm a JoggerWe've all had the conversations on the difference between a jogger and a runner. I would bristle if someone referred to me as a jogger. And yet now, I'm pretty sure I'm a jogger just out there to say I exercised and burn some calories.

You haven't heard much from me because I'm not running much. Back in August shin splints (posterior) on the side of my leg (not the front where shin splints are usually located) started plaguing me.

I run maybe 2 times a week and what used to be 4 miles is now 3 miles. On my 3 mile run, I realized I'm now a dreaded jogger. My pace is super slow and I don't have motivation to even be out there running. I run about 1.5 miles and then after that it's a walk/jog on the way back with more walking than running. I'm definitely a jogger now.

I've put off PT for numerous reasons but after realizing the shin splints aren't going away on their own, I'll be heading to PT in March. Maybe I'll regain my runner status with PT.

Happy Running! (not jogging!)Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02527827359630897863noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5162997883019077328.post-59432766201762962042015-01-17T17:30:00.000-07:002015-01-17T17:30:38.249-07:00Where Did the Good Expo's Go?Each year the Expo's and goodie bags get more disappointing. I remember when a goodie bag was full of new products, things to try and you were excited to dump out and see what you received. Post race there was food, product and more free stuff. Now in a goodie bag you get…nada. Expo…disappointing.

I went to the Phoenix PF Changs RnR marathon expo and was terribly disappointed. When the race first showed up in Phoenix the expo had car vendors like Saturn and Nissan. Southwest was there one year and I got a cool free pull backpack bag (which I still use today). PF Changs had an awesome booth. So many shoe companies with show discounts and of course all the muscle gels, sport drinks and muscle massagers. There were so many vendors and lots of free stuff, back then.

Compare this to Europe's races and they get all kinds of free stuff including bottles of wine. I know where my next race needs to be.

I believe the decrease of goodies is due to higher booth rentals for the vendors (so the race can make more money), and the increase of races. There are so many races the vendors can't possibly participate in all of the races. However, with PF Changs, it is the largest Arizona race with people flying in from out of town.

Not to be a complete negative naysayer, there were two things I really enjoyed at the expo. PF Changs had samples of their sangria and Ryan Hall was speaking when I was there. Hearing any elite marathoner is motivational and Ryan Hall was no exception.

p.s. I signed up for the race but with recent injuries and not trained I decided not to run the race but I had to get my t-shirt and check out the expo anyways.
It's amazing how many of the items were accomplished just by the fact they were written down. Although I started another 101 things list after the 2009 list I didn't complete it or start it. Now it's time for a new list, focus and plan.

Coming up with 101 things is a really tough exercise. I looked at many blogs for inspiration and determined many of the lists were written by younger people. Get married or finish college (their list) as compared to lower cholesterol (my list). I'm to a point in my life that I don't want to put more things to do on my list unless I'm passionate about it and it fits in with what I want. Traveling all 7 continents is great but I'm realistic that it's not really a goal that I want to fret about.

The Mission: Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
The Criteria: Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).
Why 1001 Days? Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
Call it the 100+ degrees day
The 5am or earlier wake-up alarm
The 15 extra pounds
The glass of wine in the evening
Or just plain lazy
I'm just not feeling the running joy and it makes me depressed. So much so that I repeat all the bad things that make me feel guilty. I hope when it cools down I can get moving again. Maybe I can lose weight. Maybe I can enjoy running once again.

While sulking and procrastinating I watch this video and I'm not stupid enough to think if this 40 year old can run like this I can, but it does motivate me that I don't have to stay where I'm at and I can do something more. Joe Pavey didn't let the 'I'm too old' negative thoughts tear her down. She got out there and did something no one has done before.

Maybe if you're in a slump this will help boost you up and get your butt out there.
They managed capturing runners running with a bicycle and a small trailer allowing the rider in the back to be in front of the runners and capturing film. They ask the runners personal questions and get back honest, heartfelt answers. I recommend taking a little time to watch this video.
AGAIN?Helping prove the statistics that people spend lots of money on their pets, I continue to get Sundae acupuncture every 3-4 months. With the scare when my cat sundae quit eating, I want to keep her healthy and happy. Well happy maybe an overstatement because she's still just a pissy towards her sister.

Today I brought my neighbor, a future vet, to the appointment. She was awesome cuddling with Sundae and giving Sundae a spot to curl up into.

People look at me very strange when I say I'm going to the vet to get my cat acupuncture. They think I should be terrified of being clawed to death. I talked in a previous post about the benefits of acupuncture and how Sundae acted and she really doesn't mind it. She HATES the car ride to the vet but on the way home she is much calmer, quieter and only meows a couple times.

When Dr. Jacquie from Alta Vista Animal Hospital put the first two needles in, Sundae quit purring and Dr. Jacquie said she'd have to turn the purr back on, which was a needle in the forehead. Sure enough, with the needle in the forehead, Sundae started purring again.

So we're at home and Sundae is quite lazy and only hissed at her sister once. Ahhh, the wonders of acupuncture. Thanks Dr. Jacquie.

Arizona Road Racers (ARR) puts on 5K races every year and calls them the summer series. For only $50, you can run 5 races, get a run in early and have a blast.

Jacquie and I get a big kick out of being twins (I know.....super stupid) and dressed in our yellow adventure run shirts and hot pick socks. To get extra mileage in we arrived early for a 2 mile warmup and enjoyed checking out the new course through the Gilbert Riparian preserve.

The narrow course path dictated a wave start for the 5K and Jacquie lined up with the 7min/mile group and I lined up with the 8 min/mile group. Even with the wave start it was congested the first 1/2 mile. People around me must have thought I was crazy. With Jacquie being in front of me, when the course doubled back, I yelled WOO HOO to her. When I passed Spiderman, I couldn't help myself and had to sing the spider-man song.

Spider-man, spider-man

does whatever a spider can

spins a web, anysize

catches thieves just like flies

At this point spider-man corrects me. Catches RUNNERS he says

Look out.

Here comes the spider-man

Considering my fitness, I was pleased with my time and VERY surprised to hear I placed 2nd in my age group. The ARR series has very serious and fast runners and I never would have placed in prior races with my time. I guess the fast women in my age group just didn't show up today. Jacquie, got first in her age group and we hung around to get our AG awards.

The 45-50 female age group was called and Jacquie was #1 and since I just turned 45, I was #2. We had no idea we were in the same age group. The announced even commented we dressed the same so it was quite hilarious seeing our reactions realizing we were in the same age group and wearing the same outfit.

What an awesome morning.

Happy Running!

Having run many Ragnars with strangers, I wasn't worried about it. I knew 30ish hours with other runners could only end in friendship.

Ragnar Del Sol runs from Wickenburg, to Buckeye, back up to Surprise and Cave Creek, over to Fountain Hills and down to Tempe. Lots of miles, laughs, food and in and out of the van.

The team captain, Kevin, was a Ragnar virgin and I worried about over stepping my boundaries. I've learned some things over my 12 Ragnars, team and van captain experiences and wanted to share but not be overbearing. I can be a control freak at times, especially about 'the spreadsheet' and runners paces. It's important to me that during the race to have an idea of when someone is expected to come in. This helps the other runners and the other van to know when they will be running. I've had some horror stories (like the gal who ran 12 min miles but said she would run 8:30's).

Kev, despite the fact of being a CPA (which are usually anal control freaks), was quite relaxed. The relaxed disposition could have something to do with the fact he had a stent put in only the month before. It was ok though since we had a doctor with a complete pharmacy on board. Kevin is going to get a huge doctor bill from Doctor Gary for the 30 hour continual monitoring and the double time billing for all the questions I asked him and the eye liner re-application I required of Doctor Gary.

Our team name was Rock Solid for Solid Rock and we were raising money for Alice Coopers youth center Solid Rock. The best part about running for this team were the incredibly awesome long sleeves shirts and the black eye liner I got to wear to mimic Alice Cooper. In the middle of the night I would sneak up on people wearing my orange lit hair, black eyes and say ~SPOOKY~. Seeing their reaction was priceless.

Rather than continue my ramble, here are pictures from the race.
Tomorrow I head back to work. Three weeks off of work after carpal tunnel hand surgery and I don't feel ready. The lists of things I wanted to do, the peace of relaxation after being bored and the organization of the closets didn't happen. Time went so fast and unfortunately much of the beginning of it I couldn't do much because of my hand.

On the topic of my hand, it is healing quite well albeit very stiff and uncomfortable in the morning. It is still challenging to hand write but typing is pretty good. Was three weeks off long enough? Tomorrow will tell.

So now that my "vacation" is done, what's next? First I need to get into a routine again. Maybe with a routine and my lists I can feel sane. Oh, scratch that...that's a fluffy concept that doesn't seem to really exist. I'm hoping to get into a running routine, an evening reroutine of attempting to be productive and stay up on paperwork (famous last words spoken every year.)

What do you do to stay balanced? To prioritize and keep up with the never ending tasks?

I'm off to make dinner, feed the kitties and ponder what my first day back shall bring.

Happy running!

However, the image conjured in my mind doesn't equate to the finished image on my computer screen. This gap leads to disappointment. This video is timely since just this morning I thought maybe I should put the camera aside. But if I did that, I would ignore the killer instinct, wouldn't improve or lessen The Gap.

While the video targets creative people, it applies to runners too. The desire to get better yet having the inevitable disappointment.
First Run After Carpal Tunnel SurgeryI can always tell when I've had a long break from running. I itch all over when I run. My thighs, stomach, butt, arms... everything itches. I figure that's due to the fat cells being jiggled, not enjoying it one bit and screaming STOP!

I went for my first run after carpal tunnel surgery and my fat cells got quite comfortable in the 7 day running break and jiggled till they itched. What didn't itch, hurt or feel numb was my hand. Prior to surgery after 1.5 miles my right hand felt numb; so my 4 mile run was a good test and there was no numbness.

I knew prior to the surgery I was underestimating the discomfort and I was right, it hurt much more than I expected. I thought I would be able to write with a pen, work on the computer, take pictures and work on my taxes the day after surgery. It took a week before I felt I could actually write and type on the computer (although using the mouse with the left hand is still more comfortable). I did take pictures over the weekend and took frequent breaks and learned to move the zoom with my left hand instead of the right.

One thing that surprised me and got me lots of compassion is the bruising and the swelling. The first two days after surgery I had to keep my hand held above my heart to reduce the swelling and blood flowing into the fingers. Even though I followed doctors orders, the fingers still swelled and each day became more purple until it looked like I hadn't washed my hand for a month.

The area above the bandage changed coloring and looks bruised

If you're reading this blog because you're contemplating surgery, here's what I can tell you about post surgery:

Running and sleeping is without the numbness. I've heard this from other people that the relief from the discomfort from the carpal tunnel is immediate. It's just the surgery that hurts.

It's surgery. Don't fool yourself and think because it's a common surgery it's not going to hurt. It's still surgery and it still hurts.

My doctor said I could go back to work the next day or he could give me up to 6 weeks off. I opted for three weeks off. There is no way I could have used a computer or written with a pen the day after. After one week I'm feeling well enough to write and can type. Using the mouse is uncomfortable but lower on my arm instead of on the incision. I'm hopeful that after 3 weeks I'll feel relaxed and have some projects and my taxes done. I'll be a new person with a working right hand.

Each day there is more movement with the fingers and not too many things aggravate it. I can open doors now( I didn't have the strength or ability to grab a door knob the first 5 days), dressing myself is better but pulling up my pants is still a delicate situation. I have to re-position my hands a lot to prevent discomfort or twisting my hand wrong. I haven't tried putting my bra on myself yet but will try tomorrow.

I kept my bandage till the 8th day and it didn't hurt to take it off. It was so wonderful showering without a plastic bag and rubberband over my hand.

The incision area is still going to hurt for awhile. My doctor said that it'll probably be a couple months before I can do a pushup without feeling it. Considering I'm not a giant fan of pushups anyways, I'm not heart broken to hold off on them.

Milk it for all it's worth. I haven't had to make dinner or wash the dishes in a week and I think I can get another week out of it.

A big thanks to my sweetie for taking care of me, making my meals, doing the dishes and helping me out.

Happy Running!

This year my friends husband, Richard, was participating and I went down to cheer him on. For those of you unaware of Ironman, it's a grueling 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and to top it off a full marathon, 26.2 miles. All of this needs to be accomplished 17 hours after the 7am swim start finishing before the clock strikes midnight and the carriage turns back into the pumpkin.

If you have ever whined about how hard your race was, how tired you were then suck it up buttercup because we, as mere runners, have it easy.

Each section has a cutoff time and the swim cutoff is 2 hours and 20 minutes. The elites are out of the water in 50 minutes but the real world is out there longer. After seeing Richard transition from swim to bike (1:10 minutes), we stood in the long line at Starbucks and talked to a couple in their 50's from Texas. They were coaches and Ironman themselves and encouraged us to go to the swim and cheer on the people still out there. The swimmers can hear the cheers and get revived even though their heads are underwater and they have earplugs.
Having never been to a tri, I didn't know there were 'strippers', volunteers to peel off the wetsuits off the swimmers. It was quite entertaining.

This gal, #946, came out of the water with 5 minutes to spare. She was so dang happy (I don't think I'd be able to stand let alone be happy after swimming) that I decided to stalk her the rest of the race. More on that later.
After the swim cut-off we headed back over to the bike to watch for Richard. The day before the race Richard joined Jacquie and I on our long run where I quizzed him about what he would be wearing. I was so thankful he met us out on the run and pointed out his funky colored shoes. Out of all the bikers, most of them wearing all black, he's the only one with funky colored shoes and we were able to easily pick him out.

2nd loop

After his second loop I headed home to do my chores but I wasn't done spectating. Once I got home I downloaded pictures and admired swimmer 946 determination. The athlete tracker identified her as Stephanie from Tempe, AZ. I tracked her on her bike and the start of the run. At 8:30pm I drove back to the race to cheer on the athletes still out there trudging through their final miles.

The athletes at this point are walking with a few runners. Some would run for a bit and then go back into walking. I cheered as loud as I could and woo hoo'd them loud enough other runners could hear it too. I continued to track Stephanie on my phone and was disappointed I hadn't found her yet. I had missed her at each of my spectator spots. I crossed the bridge to try another point and eventually this lady came along. Her number was off to the side and so I asked what her number was. #946. I said you're Stephanie and I've been stalking you all day. I think I'd be freaked out knowing I had a stalker but she just smiled and said really? I walked/jogged with her for a bit talking to her and then left for the finish-line where I watched her cross. The announcer cried out. Stephanie, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN.

For those runners, if you have ever whined about how hard your race was, how tired you were then suck it up buttercup because we, as mere runners, have it easy.

I watched men and women athletes cross the finish line after competing for 16+ hours. Some had prosthetics, some were 70 years old, one was a heart transplant recipient. One lady was so cramped that her entire body was shaped like a C and yet she ran across the finish line in obvious pain. And then with 37 seconds to spare,we spectators watched the screen showing the finish line with hope and tears in our eyes as a truly energy deficient male athlete was assisted across the finish line. YOU ARE AN IRONMAN.
I am now a proud owner of a vagina medal and can't say I have any other medals like that. Since I would have nothing to write about for a"I Rocked It" race report, I'm doing a post of top 6 tips for running the Women's Half Marathon in Scottsdale.

Leave your hand sanitizer at home. This race is so well equipped with hand sanitizer in the portapotties and sinks with water, you won't need your own hand sanitizer for 'just in case'.

Bring your own GU. For two years in a row although there was Power Gel on the course around mile 7, there was no one to hand it out. At least this year the boxes were open and placed at the end of the table but it would still require you to run off to the side, open it and stop in order to get the water (which there were only about 5 volunteers at the water stop)

With only two of the seven aid stations having Gatorade plan your fueling without relying on what's out on the course.

Get ready to rock out. There are numerous points where the music is blasting helping you keep up your running pace.

Ignore the BS that it's a downhill course. Race organizers love it when it's net downhill and they can advertise it as downhill but net downhill doesn't mean there aren't any flipping hills.

Start out slow! Don't make the mistake I've made for the last two years and go out too fast and then fall apart at mile 8. The downhill start tricks you into a false sense of confidence that doesn't carry through when the race gets tough.

Do something super fun, like photo bomb someone's pre-race photo. If I ever meet that Jacquie gal, I'll have to tell her to loosen up and have some fun. She's SOOOOO serious.

The start the race has lots of pink portapotties, sinks (with real water) outside of the portapotties, a freshen up station for after the race with Secret deodorant and wipes, pink finisher shirts and now the infamous finisher medals with a picture of a vagina.

Overheard at the Women's Half Marathon finish line in Tempe.

Woman #1: Doesn't that flower look like a vagina?

Woman #2: Yes, I think it is a vagina.

Hence, I present you with the finisher medal that all women who ran the Women's Scottsdale Half Marathon shall wear proudly.

My newest hobby of photography led me to enter some pictures in the fair so I went just so I could see which of my pictures were hung.
John and I rode some crazy ride that turned, spun upset down and turned my stomach. The little gal on our same row was crying and it may have had something to do with the fact I exercised my roller coaster (AKA the zombie scream).
I am running and training for the women's half in Scottsdale and if the stars and moon align, the Tucson Marathon. Ramping up for the marathon I've had a strained calf and quad so the photography class over the weekend north of Flagstaff was a welcome rest from running.

Class started at 10am up at Hart Prairie, 240 acres of land held by The Nature Conservancy. The rustic, off the grid environment, made for a perfect location to take pictures of the fall colors. A large, beautiful meadow expanse butted up to pine trees and aspens, just starting to turn. The cabins were quaint and the composting toilet was actually quite pleasant.

Arizona Highways offers photo workshops and while this was my 4th class, it was my first weekend format. The focus was Adobe Lightroom along with landscape photo shoots. Being a newbie photographer the opportunities of learning were endless.

Some people might think the worst part about landscape photography are the early morning hours. Waking up at 4:45am really wasn't that hard. Standing outside in the freezing cold and not being able to wear gloves because gloves make the camera inoperable made me want to never take another photograph again. The other thing that I disliked, and it surprised me, was how lazy I am. I would see the point on the hill we'd need to hike up to and all I could think was how far that was. I would rather run it but walk it?! Ugh. So I became quite cold and lazy but I managed a few good pictures
