Race Judicata and my 5 Year Anniversary

5 years ago at the 5K Race Judicata. I met John.  While our stories vary widely how we met, he says I had a pork chop look admiring him.  I know I was making polite conversation while waiting for my age group award.  Regardless of who's story is right (mine is), we've been together for 5 years now and run the Race Judicata each year to celebrate.

This years course although at Kiwanis park, was new and possibly made up the morning before because we ran through a ramada area in between the picnic tables.  Not your normal race course. My goal was to beat Joe, John's friend, which I announced to him at the start line.  When Joe bolted away from the starting line I thought maybe I should have kept my goal to myself.  A mile in my pace faded from 7:03 to 7:25 but Joe's pace was dropping too and I passed him at 1.5 miles.

Running a 5K is tough work and I managed my last mile at 7:22 and finished with 22:52.  This is astounding to me because I had no idea I could run a 5K that fast. After a slow, sluggish, hot summer, I didn't think I had any speed and surprised myself.  My hamstring hung in there and although I felt it later, it left me alone during the race.

John finished with 22:03 and second in his age group.  I finished first in my age group but we didn't stick around for the awards and went to breakfast instead.

Happy anniversary John.  It's been a fun 5 years and I love you.

Happy running!

Happy anniversary. Great and fast race: both on the podium. Congrats.
I think that the 5 k is a very tough race because we have to run as fast as we can since the start.
