Running Question Challenge -If you could inspire someone to run, who would it be and why?

If you could inspire someone to run, who would it be and why?
Feel free to comment or answer the question on your own blog.

Since I love running I think everyone should also love running and just needs to try it.  Obviously that's not the case but I do think if people would get out there and try it, get past the first 2 weeks of soreness they would enjoy it.  They also need to get the sentence "I'm not a runner" out of their head because that is a self-defeating thought and they can't try something if they have already convinced themselves they "aren't".

If I could inspire someone to run it would be my mom.  She is overweight with diabetes and the exercise and weight loss would do tremendous things for her.   As it is though, I don't talk about my running much with her so I guess there is little opportunities for me to inspire her. I don't think she is interested in my running or approves of it, which is one of the reasons I don't talk about it. Oh, she knows that I run but she doesn't understand how much it is part of my life, how much I love running and love talking about it.   She does go to Curves and goes for walks and although she may not start being a runner at 60, at least she doesn't sit on the couch of doom all the time.

I would get a whole group of women who are pretty sure they could never run, and start them running. Actually I did this once in a limited way and had a Running 101 sort of thing but the weather was not cooperative. The hardest part is to get them to believe in themselves long enough to show up for that first meeting. I may do this again sometime. I think that there are a lot of women who "secretly" have the desire to become a runner but their lack of faith in their ability is standing in their way!

I would get my best friend to run, partly because it would be good for her and I think it's something she could really enjoy. The other part is for selfish reasons, I would love to have someone to run with and I would love it if she understood first hand my excitement over things like new socks or a water bottle. LOL

PS My mom is the same way, she doesn't get my running, she even seems annoyed by it sometimes. She gets mad that I rearrange my schedule for something as silly as running. She may never get it but I don't let it get to me anymore.

My husband and a friend. My husband run but only sporadically and he runs the 5ks I run but he isn't serious about it. I told him I wansn't registering him for any more races because 1) they are expensive and 2) he doens't take it seriously. He needs to lose about 25 lbs and running is a great way to do it but he just doesn't want it bad enough I guess.

I also wish I could inspire my girlfriend to run. She is overweight and wants to run but doens't make the time. She also uses asthma as an excuse. I've stopped asking her to run races with me because I know how it will end up.

Great question!
I would get my co-worker/friend, she is extremely self conscious about the 50lbs she has put on in the last 3 years but she lack the will-power to do anything about it. She worked out with me a few years ago and lost 25lbs in 3 months, then she gave up. She has been trying to get preggo for the last 2yrs, the Dr told her if she lost some weight it would up her chances. She is just very defeated. I think if she would just try it she would be hooked.

MOTHERS (especially those with young families). I believe that everyone can carve 30 mins out of their day (even if it is broken up throughout the day) to do something for themselves (mentally and physically).

I hope to inspire my ten year old son to run more often. If he has inherited my genetics (cholesterol & blood pressure) it would be a great thing for him to start young.

He has run a few 5k's but after the race is over so is his running. It must be nice to be so young and be able to run a 5k with no training.

I just hope my dedication to running will someday inspire him and he can realize the benefits for himself.

Great, question 2! I'll continue to answer these on my blog as with the first question.

Love this question. Without a doubt, my sisters. We live in three different states, but I have this dream that we would meet in different places and race together. I know that each of them wants to try, but they are so self-defeating that they never make it more than a week or two. They swear they aren't made for running and I just want to kick them in the face and be like, well, I wasn't either and here I am two marathons later

Super cool format!!

I would love to get my brother and sister running. They are both relatively fit, but I really think that running would give them something to aim for, something positive that they can count on... And maybe spark some MUCH NEEDED ambition..

I like yours. I wish my youngest sister would start running. She was overweight, then got pregnant at 18, and is now overweight with pregnancy weight on top. :( I know she's unhappy about it, but she does nothing to fix it.

PS: Thanks for the follow at my new blog! I hope it helps me stay on track and is slightly entertaining. That's awesome that you are taking a class. I'll be interested to hear how it goes. I've thought a lot about memoir writing. :) Very cool!

Sorry for the delay. I've posted my answer to question 2 on my blog. I'm on the other side of the planet so my time and your's are far apart.

Good morning Christina,
I just found your blog! What a great post you have today...great topic.

I am going to steal Tony's thought...I would try to inspire my fourteen year old daughter Kay to run more. She started to run 5ks with me this summer and fall and did very well but she could be even better if she trained! I am hoping that she gives cross country a try next year! Another person who I would love to inspire is my 45 year old cousin who wants to get in shape and loose a little weight. She hears me talk about running and gets details about many of my races. I know that secretly she would love to start but is afraid of not staying commited:)

Have a great day Christina!

this is a cool "mini-series" deal!

that is unfortunate that your mom kind of disproves of your running. maybe now she'd be more willing to listen than previously? just a thought.

i wish everyone loved to run too, but i understand it's not for everyone. i just try to encourage others to be active in something they enjoy so that they stick with it.

Oh Christina, I would inspire my mom to run as well. She was a runner. But now she is very overweight and inactive. She is not nasty or bitter or mean. She is friendly and fun and lovely. I just wish she was healthy.

Steven's family doesn't seem to approve of our running.
